How do you work ?

Every now and then people ask me : “Candice, how are you able to concentrate on your work? Don’t you feel distracted? ”

I’m human, so yes, I often feel distracted, but less than I did a couple of years ago.I’m a freelancer, working at home; therefore this kind of living is not easy, I don’t separate my personal life from my professional life. It is starting to wear me off, and that’s one of the reasons why I have been looking for something else… and found it! ;)
When I work, the first thing I need to do before actually working is preparing myself. Taking a shower, putting my hair in a ponytail, cleaning my desk, making my bed. Then, I make myself a cup of (delicious) tea and log off from twitter and Facebook. It’s hard, because I’m so tempted to check my timelines, but I don’t need to, I need to work.
I’ve noticed that I work more efficiently either early in the morning or late in the evening. In the afternoon I tend to be more sidetracked and tired. Find the moment where you’re the most inspired and get things done! Also, music helps me a lot. Try to make yourself a “work playlist” and here you go!
An essential thing to do is to take breaks. You won’t be 100% efficient if you don’t take the time to just relax.
It could be watching a youtube video, reading a few pages from a book, talking with a friend, or even taking a stroll in the sun. At first, you should just work for 30minutes and take 15minutes of break.
Then, you’ll see that the 30 minutes will soon turn into on hour! I swear, it worked for me.

Doesn’t it feel good when you’ve accomplish a lot of work at the end of the day? Don’t you feel less anxious when you’re lying in your bed about what you should have done?

  1. I think I made a mistake when I bought the desk I currently have. It’s too small because of the shelves that sit on it, plus I built backwards (yeay me!). I can never work efficiently when I’m home. Which is such a problem. I will definitely need to work out a system for the researching and writing of my dissertation (says the girl who has been in school for more than half her life and is currently in her last year of university).
